Bichon Frise in Liverpool: a guide

This page is general information for owners. It is not veterinary advice. If you're worried about your dog's health, speak to your vet.
Got a Bichon Frise, or thinking of getting one? Here's what trusted sources say about these cheerful, curly white companions, along with some friendly tips for life with one in Liverpool.
At a glance
- What they are: a small companion dog in the Toy group. The Royal Kennel Club says "bichon" means white dog and "frise" describes the soft corkscrew curls. The breed was developed in France, but is thought to have existed on Tenerife as far back as the 14th century, and became a favourite in royal courts and noble homes (Royal Kennel Club).
- Size: small. The breed standard gives an ideal height of 23 to 28cm, but it's a guide, and an individual dog may be larger or smaller (Royal Kennel Club breed standard). PDSA gives an average weight of 4 to 7kg (PDSA).
- Lifespan: over 12 years (Royal Kennel Club) (PDSA).
- Exercise: the Royal Kennel Club lists up to 30 minutes a day (Royal Kennel Club), and PDSA says around 30 minutes (PDSA). Dogs Trust says they still need daily walks, time to explore and play, training and daily enrichment, but might not manage long or strenuous walks (Dogs Trust).
- Coat: fine and silky with soft corkscrew curls, 7 to 10cm long, and white (Royal Kennel Club breed standard). Bichons don't shed much, but Dogs Trust says the curly coat should be brushed daily to stop it matting, and can be clipped by a professional groomer every 6 to 8 weeks (Dogs Trust). The Royal Kennel Club lists grooming as every day (Royal Kennel Club).
- Health: PDSA lists luxating patellas (slipping kneecaps), allergies, cataracts, bladder stones, portosystemic shunt (a blood vessel problem affecting the liver) and diabetes among the problems Bichons can be prone to (PDSA). The Royal Kennel Club recommends breeders use the BVA/KC/ISDS eye scheme as a minimum (Royal Kennel Club). PDSA advises checking the parents have been screened and asking about the health of the parents and grandparents (PDSA). Speak to your vet about any concerns.
Personality
Every dog is an individual, so treat this as a guide to what Bichons are typically like, not a promise. Dogs Trust says every Bichon's temperament is different (Dogs Trust).
- Happy and outgoing: the breed standard describes a "gay, happy, lively little dog" with a "friendly and outgoing" temperament (Royal Kennel Club breed standard). PDSA calls Bichons very affectionate, loving dogs with a happy, playful nature, who are just as quick to jump at a cuddle and fuss as at a game (PDSA).
- Made for company: the Royal Kennel Club says Toy breeds are small companion dogs who should have friendly personalities and love attention (Royal Kennel Club).
- Trainability: Dogs Trust says any breed can learn new tricks with positive, reward-based training, and that life skills like recall, loose-lead walking and settling matter just as much (Dogs Trust).
- With children: PDSA describes Bichons as excellent with children (PDSA). Dogs Trust adds that any claim that a breed is "good with children" should be treated with caution, because it depends on the individual dog. It also advises that children and dogs should always be closely supervised by an adult, and that your dog needs a den where they can rest undisturbed (Dogs Trust).
- With other dogs and pets: PDSA says they're excellent with other pets too (PDSA). Dogs Trust points out that some dogs like meeting other dogs and some don't (Dogs Trust).
- When left alone: as companion dogs who love attention (Royal Kennel Club), Bichons usually do best with company. PDSA recommends building up time alone gradually from puppyhood and leaving puzzle toys to keep them busy. It also says four hours is the longest any dog should routinely be left (PDSA). If you work long days, a walker or licensed day care can help. If your dog seems distressed when left, speak to your vet first.
What Bichons love doing
Bichons don't need long hikes, but Dogs Trust says they need regular exercise and stimulation, with daily walks, time to explore and play, and daily enrichment (Dogs Trust). Here are some ideas.

Playtime and games
PDSA describes a happy, playful nature (PDSA), and the breed standard a "lively little dog" (Royal Kennel Club breed standard). Tip: short games of chase-the-toy indoors or in the garden suit a small dog's daily needs.
In Liverpool: Wag n' Waves (L24) has an indoor soft play room you book privately, so your dog has the space to itself, with a cushioned, non-slip floor (Wag n' Waves, checked 18 Oct 2026).

Short walks with time to explore
Dogs Trust suggests daily walks plus plenty of opportunity to explore and burn energy, and says young dogs may do better with a few shorter walks than one long one (Dogs Trust). Tip: let them sniff and set the pace. Our dog walks and parks page has ideas, and a quick brush afterwards keeps bits out of the coat.
In Liverpool: green spaces in our listings include Childwall Woods (L16), Woolton Woods & Camp Hill (L25), Croxteth Country Park (L11) and Stanley Park (L4). Dogs aren't allowed in play areas, walled gardens, picnic areas or on sports pitches (council guidance).

Meeting other dogs
PDSA describes Bichons as excellent with other pets (PDSA), but not every dog enjoys play dates, so go at your dog's pace (Dogs Trust). Tip: if your Bichon loves company, a licensed day care that groups dogs by size can give them friends while you're at work.
In Liverpool: Wag n' Waves (L24) runs small weekly dog socials, grouped by size, with a maximum of five dogs. Each one starts with a group walk (Wag n' Waves, checked 18 Oct 2026). For puppies, Precious Paws (L24) runs a Sunday puppy playgroup for socialisation (Precious Paws, checked 18 Oct 2026).

Living with a Bichon Frise in Liverpool
Book regular professional grooming. PDSA says coat trimming is needed every couple of months, often by a professional groomer (PDSA), and Dogs Trust suggests clipping every 6 to 8 weeks if you choose to (Dogs Trust). PDSA advises not tackling matts at home, and choosing a reputable groomer, for example a member of a trade body such as the Pet Industry Federation (PDSA). Find one on our Liverpool dog groomers page.
Brush every day. Daily brushing stops that curly coat matting (Dogs Trust).
Check the ears. PDSA advises checking ears regularly and calling your vet before cleaning if you see a build-up of wax or hair, or they get smelly or itchy (PDSA).
Muddy walks happen. If they just get muddy on a walk, PDSA suggests rinsing them in warm water rather than reaching for the shampoo (PDSA).
Start training early. Look for reward-based classes on our Liverpool dog trainers page.
Out at work all day? A licensed day care or a midday visit can make a real difference. Browse our Liverpool dog day care page, where we show council licence numbers wherever they exist.
