Got a Cockapoo, or thinking of getting one? Here's what trusted sources say about these curly-coated crossbreeds, along with some friendly tips for life with one in Liverpool.

At a glance

Personality

Every dog is an individual, so treat this as a guide to what Cockapoos are typically like, not a promise. Temperament varies a lot with the parents. Battersea says some Cockapoos are calm and easy-going, while others are highly energetic, playful and always looking for attention (Battersea). Meeting the parents is the best way to get a feel for what your puppy might be like.

What Cockapoos love doing

With a spaniel on one side and a water retriever on the other, most Cockapoos love a job to do. Battersea suggests around an hour of exercise a day, plus daily mental stimulation (Battersea). Here are some ideas, mostly drawn from the Cockapoo Club of GB's gundog activity tips (Cockapoo Club of GB).

Fetch and retrieving games

Both parent breeds were originally retrieving dogs, so chasing and bringing back a toy comes naturally. The Cockapoo Club of GB suggests adding waits and send-aways so they have to think as well as run (Cockapoo Club of GB). Tip: find a big open space on our dog walks and parks page, and keep throws short for young puppies.

In Liverpool: council parks in our listings with plenty of room include Sefton Park (L17), Croxteth Country Park (L11), Walton Hall Park (L4) and Newsham Park (L6). Dogs aren't allowed in play areas, walled gardens, picnic areas or on sports pitches (council guidance).

Swimming and splashing

The Poodle was bred as a water retriever, and its traditional clip helped it swim (Royal Kennel Club). The Cockapoo Club of GB says gundogs generally like a good swim, or at least a walk near water where they can run and splash (Cockapoo Club of GB). Tip: only let them in where it's safe and dogs are allowed, and rinse and dry that curly coat afterwards so it doesn't knot. Our walks and parks page is a good place to start.

In Liverpool: Wag n' Waves in Hunts Cross (L24) has a purpose-built dog swimming pool, and first-timers start with an introductory swim with its staff (Wag n' Waves, checked 17 Oct 2026). In Sefton Park, dogs must stay out of the lakes.

Sniffing and scent games

The Cocker Spaniel's breed standard describes its bustling movement "particularly when following scent" (Royal Kennel Club). The Cockapoo Club of GB suggests hiding food or toys around the house or garden so they can track them down. Putting a scent on a toy first makes it even more fun (Cockapoo Club of GB). Tip: on walks, let them have a good sniff. It's brain work for them.

In Liverpool: Precious Paws (L24) runs owner workshops that include scent work (Precious Paws, checked 17 Oct 2026).

Puzzle feeders and food games

Instead of just a bowl, the Cockapoo Club of GB suggests making dogs work for their food. You could scatter kibble in the garden, stuff a Kong or use a treat-dispensing ball (Cockapoo Club of GB). PDSA recommends enrichment feeders and brain games to help stop boredom when a dog is left for a while (PDSA). Tip: make sure any toy you leave them alone with is safe and can't be chewed up and swallowed.

Agility, flyball and training classes

Battersea says Cockapoos' intelligence suits training and activities like agility (Battersea). The Cockapoo Club of GB has its own guides to early ball training for flyball and agility (Cockapoo Club of GB). Crossbreeds can join the Royal Kennel Club's Activity Register, which covers agility, flyball, obedience, rally and heelwork to music (Royal Kennel Club). Tip: find a class near you on our Liverpool dog trainers page.

In Liverpool: Precious Paws (L24) runs a four-week Agility & Hoopers Foundation course for puppies under one year (Precious Paws, checked 17 Oct 2026).

Playing with other dogs

The Cockapoo Club of GB suggests group walks and letting your dog meet, greet and play with other dogs, ideally off lead where it's safe (Cockapoo Club of GB). Tip: if your Cockapoo is a social butterfly, a licensed day care can give them company while you're at work. Our walks and parks page has spots to meet other dogs.

In Liverpool: Wag n' Waves (L24) runs small weekly dog socials, grouped by size, with a maximum of five dogs. Each one starts with a group walk (Wag n' Waves, checked 17 Oct 2026).

Living with a Cockapoo in Liverpool

Keep that busy brain busy. A walk is great, but Cockapoos love a job too. Hide a toy for them to sniff out, play fetch, or scatter their kibble so they have to search for it. Our dog walks and parks page has ideas for places to stretch their legs. Always check the signs for lead rules and any areas where dogs aren't allowed.

Book regular professional grooming. That curly coat needs regular care from a professional, not just the odd trim. The Cockapoo Club of GB suggests a professional groomer every 3 months or so for a full wash and clip if your dog has a tight curly coat, with brushing at home in between (Cockapoo Club of GB). PDSA advises not trying to tackle matts at home and choosing a reputable groomer, for example a member of a trade body such as the Pet Industry Federation (PDSA). Find one on our Liverpool dog groomers page.

Muddy walks happen. A tight curly coat tends to soak up dirt and mud, and a shorter clip makes it easier to rinse off and dry (Cockapoo Club of GB). If your dog just gets muddy on a walk, PDSA suggests rinsing them in warm water rather than reaching for the shampoo (PDSA).

Start training early. A clever, energetic dog does best with plenty of positive training. Look for classes on our Liverpool dog trainers page.

Out at work all day? If your Cockapoo would be on their own for long stretches, a licensed day care or a midday walk can make a real difference. Browse our Liverpool dog day care page, where we show council licence numbers wherever they exist.
