Question 1 of 5 Which law sets out the licensing system for dog day care and home boarding in England?

Show the answer

Answer: B) The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018

The 2018 Regulations (made under the Animal Welfare Act 2006) set out licensing for day care, home boarding and other animal activities. The Pet Animals Act 1951 was an older pet shop law.

Question 2 of 5 Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, are you responsible for a client's dog while it is at daycare?

Show the answer

Answer: C) Yes, the Act covers temporary responsibility and being in charge of an animal

Section 3 of the Act says responsibility can be temporary and includes being in charge of an animal. While the dog is in your care, you share responsibility for meeting its needs.

Question 3 of 5 Which of these is one of the five welfare needs in the Animal Welfare Act 2006?

Show the answer

Answer: B) The need to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease

The five needs are a suitable environment, a suitable diet, being able to show normal behaviour, being housed with or apart from other animals, and protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease.

Question 4 of 5 What must a staff training policy include, according to the Defra guidance?

Show the answer

Answer: B) An annual appraisal, planned CPD and recognition of knowledge gaps

The written training policy must be reviewed every year and include an annual appraisal, planned continuing professional development and a way of recognising knowledge gaps.

Question 5 of 5 A regular customer asks you to take one dog over the licensed maximum "just for today". What should you do?

Show the answer

Answer: C) Politely decline and refer the owner to the manager

The licence states the maximum number of dogs. Going over it is a breach, whatever the dog's size. Never leave a dog out of the register either; records must be accurate.

Please note: this is a CPD course, not a regulated qualification. It isn't Level 2 or Level 3, isn't equivalent to one, and isn't regulated by Ofqual.

Questions

Is this a qualification?

No. It's a CPD (continuing professional development) course. It isn't a regulated qualification, isn't Level 2 or Level 3, and isn't regulated by Ofqual.

Will it meet my licence requirements?

The dog activity licence guidance expects staff to be competent and trained. This course gives you training records and a certificate you can show an inspector. Some licence routes ask for a regulated qualification, so check with your council.

How long does it take?

It's self-paced. There are 49 short video lessons (3 to 5 minutes each), and you can stop and start whenever you like on a phone, tablet or computer.

What if I find reading or tests hard?

The course is written in plain English with short paragraphs. Every video has subtitles and a transcript, there are no timers, and you can retake quizzes as often as you need.

Can I try it first?

Yes. Lesson 1.2, “Your role and duty of care”, is a free preview with no card needed. You also have 14 days to cancel for a full refund if you haven't started any paid lessons.
